The weather was nice and sunny the entire week - starting off in the 70s during the day and by the week end was in the low 80s. Beach Street was mostly dead - most of the Beach Street vendors moved out to the Daytona Speedway and Destination Datona - around the new Harley shop at I-95 and US-1. The news on the street was that the shops on Beach Street were going to be replaced with condos in about 18 months.

Old School

I went to Destination Dayton on the 1st Saturday AM. Traffic was backed up onto I-95. It took 20-25 minutes to get parked. A lot of the area was under construction and with moderate wind there was a dust storm. I checked out the vendors and the new HD shop. Besides the shop, the dealer had a large tent set up with add-on parts, the HD history trailer was there. The HD prices were all at "full retail" - demonstrating a lot of greed with the volume of traffic that was walking through.

Main Street Shot

Main Street was the usual side show. Packed sidewalk shuffle, entertaining characters, bands, and pastie girls pushing $4 beers. Just standing on Main Street and waching the traffic /circus go by is entertaining.

I went out to the speedway - checked out the vendors and rode several HD bikes including the new Street Bob - I didn't like it at all - The narrow mini-ape handlebars and close (no leg room) pegs made it feel like I was riding a mini-bike with my hands close together. The Street Bob has the new 6-speed transmission- which was about the only thing I liked. I guess I'm use to riding my softtail and also didn't care for vibration the unbalanced engine produces.

I looked at the new Star (Yamaha) motorcycle at the speedway and was impressed. They have 113 ci engines (HD has 88), about 112 HP (HD has about 70), impressive styling, 5-speeds (I would like to see 6), and a $13-14K price tag. They have several add-ons to choose from. I didn't ride one, but if I was looking for a new bike they would be on the short list.
